- Introduction to Costume Design
Alyssa Opishinski is a guest artist and lecturer at Skidmore College as well as a costume designer, sewing instructor, technician and dresser working mainly in the tri-state area. Originally an art student, she found her way to theater through her interest in fashion design. Her designs for Skidmore College include Our Town, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and an opera, Xerxes, in collaboration with the Music Department. With over ten years of sewing experience, Alyssa enjoys teaching sewing both privately and to classes.
As the resident costume designer for the Hartford Children’s Theater for two years, Alyssa designed well-known musicals such as Hairspray, Annie and 13. Other design credits at independent theaters include a production of The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity put on with fellow URI alumni and an outdoor production of Othello.
She has worked for many years as a technician and dresser in LORT theaters such as The Goodspeed Opera House (where she completed two apprenticeships in wardrobe and scenic arts), McCarter Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Paper Mill Playhouse and Capital Repertory, as well as for other institutions like The Juilliard School and The American Repertory Ballet. In 2014, her work took her halfway around the world to the Wuzhen Theatre Festival of China with Mary Zimmerman’s original production run of The White Snake.
